Every year at the end of January/early February, the city of Rotterdam becomes a vibrant film community - during the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The richly varied programme is presented in cinemas around Schouwburgplein and further afield. De Doelen is the beating heart of the festival with approximately 2,500 Dutch and international film professionals visiting Rotterdam. Pathé Cinema Schouwburgplein presents completely different films compared to the rest of the year. The large crowds (as many as 329,000 visitors in 2018) walk from cinema to cinema theatre with Schouwburgplein as the central festival location.
